a fragment, by Stephen R. Spencer II
Was a poet before published
a poet before my first poem
a poet before October 12
nineteen ninety one
before my parents met
before the atomic bomb
before the death of God
this was made my many
this was not made by one
this is the synthesis of ideas
the end of Jim Crow poetry
the future is not now
it is after we die when
your grandkids sound like me
this is not the end of culture
this is the evolution of it
borne out of 6 millennia
of mixed blood spilt
I am not white guilt
but the white apocalypse
and tomorrow is the land of
interracial relations adopting
different colored babies
this is not what is possible
this is the inevitability
prophesied by the song revived
In Xanadu did Kubla Khan,
if it’s not like this
you’re doing it wrong
if it’s not like this
you’re doing it wrong
if it’s not like this
was a poet before poetry
