‘Awake This Afternoon’, by Stephen R. Spencer II

I’m awake, slept in late
When I break fast it’s past midday
Glass of OJ, bowl of Special K
Cup of coffee, and I’m on my way

I’m on my way to the cafe
Planning to polish up my resume
That’s when, change of plans
Text from a friend saying, “Hey man”

We get drunk and just hangout
Roll a blunt, watch Koyaanisqatsi
Our friends show up after sundown
Their friends show and we get rowdy
We get category 8 earthquake
The ground opens, likes how we taste
And there’s no getting out from the base
Is this a dream or am I awake?

Most afternoons
Most afternoons
Most afternoons I get out of bed
Make a to-do list of things I won’t get to
This afternoon
This afternoon
This afternoon I try something different
Grab my notepad and I start scribbling

“Life’s worth living, life’s worth living a lot
None of us know how much time we got
Life’s worth living, life’s worth living a lot
Get up today, ‘cause tomorrow you may not”

Next morn alarm goes off I get out of bed
Don’t hit snooze, run a comb through my head
Walk the dog, and then I go grocery shopping
When I get home I deep clean my kitchen
Scrubbing a burner, I begin transcending
Through the ceiling, through the stratosphere
Through space and time, through a door that says
Exit Here. . . Right back to cleaning my kitchen
